Banner Painting 101

Find inspiration

After deciding on your theme, do some research and find the best visual method to convey your ideas. Some platforms you can try include Pinterest and Dribble.

Download a suitable application

Paper and pen can only get you so far. With technology, you could easily draw in different colours, erase mistakes and expand your illustrative ability. However, it can sometimes be difficult to find suitable apps. Lucky for you, we have just the right apps for you! Free and easy to use with beginner-friendly interfaces, they cater to almost all levels of artistic capability.

  • For all the iPad and tablet users out there, some useful apps to start of include Sketchbook and Adobe Draw

  • If you are looking to do some higher level designing, you could also consider downloading the “BIG3”, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop and Indesign on your computer.

Purchase your materials

The first thing you need is the banner cloth itself of course! Often, cloth comes in bales measuring 1m in height, and after buying your desired length you’ll have to sew them together to match the dimensions of your banner design — this is where a sewing machine comes in handy! Before you can start painting, you will also need to purchase paints. Check out the Welfare Room for affordable paint!

Whitewash your banner

Giving your banner a base coat allows the colours to stand out better, and makes it more resistant to the wind. This can also be done with the colour of the background of your banner (but it’s preferable not to ‘white’ wash with a dark colour as you’ll still need to draw your design).

Sketch out your design

To accurately transfer your designs from your computer devices onto the banner cloth, you will need to sketch out the design. The best way to do this would be to mark out a 1m by 1m grid on your banner design, as well as the banner cloth. Project the design onto the banner and get a couple of friends to help!

Paint!

Finally, we have come to the final step, the actual painting of the banner. But wait just a minute! You need proper painting skills to do justice to your beautiful banner, don’t you? Fret not! Here are some tips and tricks on how you can paint your banners.

Other tips

Not sure if you can finish in a single banner painting session and don’t want your mixed paints to dry out? Save your plastic drinking bottles to contain your paints. Another tip would be to cut out the top of one plastic drinking bottle to use as a funnel to transfer your paints. Be sure to label your paints after transferring them, especially if you have many similar colours.
